The ePropulsion Spirit 2 is without a doubt the most exciting development (so far) in electric outboards in 2026. It’s the still a perfect combination of lightweight, quiet and clean, and now that it’s twice as powerful as the world’s most popular electric outboard (the Spirit 1.0 Plus), it’s tempting to ask why would anyone buy any similar electric outboard models now that it’s available (well not quite—but we’re taking preorders)?
Is it the now the best option if you want clean, silent, reliable and low-maintenance power for a small boat, tender, dinghy, RIB/SIB, jon boat, or small sailboat?
The Spirit 2 is currently priced at $6,990 (including the battery). Here’s how it compares to it’s closest peers in our catalog:
### Spirit 1.0 Plus
At $4,790, the entry-level Spirit 1.0 Plus is $2,200 less. It is 50% as powerful and has a smaller battery, and of course missing the great design improvements of the Spirit 2, but if you have a small tender, value price-performance ratio above all else and don’t need all the bells and whistles, the Spirit 1.0 is still a solid value and easy recommendation.
### RemigoOne
In many ways, there’s a solid case for the RemigoOne to still be the best choice for many use cases. With its all-in-one, rugged design, it’s a very different animal altogether. Many people find the lightweight portability (12kg in total), versatility (fits all shaft lengths), and simplicity of operation to be irreplaceable. if you’re using it on a small tender, don’t require hydrogeneration, don’t care about the flexibility of extending the range with an extra battery, we would heartily recommend the RemigoOne.
### Spirit 1.0 Evo
The Spirit 1.0 Evo is similar in price to the Spirit 2, but lacking all the goodness in the new Spirit 2 design that we can’t see it being nearly as popular as it was. For the $1,280 price difference between the two, we can’t recommend you purchase the Spirit 1.0 Evo for your sailboat unless your budget simply can’t afford the Spirit 2. The doubling of power, increase in range and brilliant design more than covers the price difference.
### Navy 3.0 Evo
The Navy 3.0 Evo is also threatened by the Spirit 2, since the only distinct advantage it has is the ability to run continuously at 3,000W output (6 hp equivalent), whereas the Spirit 2 can only do so for short bursts (60 seconds) with a cool-down period in between. The highest output power that the Spirit 2 can run at continuously is 2,000W (5 hp equivalent). Assuming you combine the Navy 3.0 Evo with the recommended battery (the E60), you’ll have about twice the range in addition to a slightly higher power output. However this combination (including the tiller and battery charger) is $3,438 more expensive than the Spirit 2. We see few situations where a Spirit 2 is a better option than a Navy 3.0 Evo.
## Conclusion
In short, the Spirit 2 sits in a sweet spot that simply didn’t exist before. It delivers dramatically more power and range than the Spirit 1.0 Plus, closes the gap with the Navy 3.0 Evo at a much lower price, and makes the Spirit 1.0 Evo a tough sell for most buyers. The RemigoOne remains a compelling specialist choice for ultra-light, ultra-simple portability—but if you want the best all-around balance of power, innovation, flexibility, and long-term value in a modern electric outboard, the Spirit 2 is now the benchmark in its class.

## The ePropulsion Spirit 2 Is Here (Almost!) — And It’s a Big Step Forward

A few months ago, we shared an early look at the upcoming Spirit 2. At the time, it already looked promising: roughly double the usable power in the same lightweight, portable form factor of the Spirit 1.0 Plus/Evo (for a modest price increase).
Now it’s officially here (well, almost—see below). And it delivers.
The Spirit 2 isn’t a minor refresh. It’s a full overhaul of the decade-old (and extremely popular) Spirit platform. More power. Bigger battery. Smarter design. And a long list of quality-of-life upgrades that make real-world boating easier.
All while keeping the same lightweight, ultra-portable 20kg (44lb) package and near-silent performance Spirit owners love.
We expect the Spirit 2 to provide serious competition, and in many cases replace the Spirit 1.0 Evo and the Navy 3.0 Evo. Furthermore we’re betting the Spirit 2 will become our most popular model in 2026.
## Twice the Power — With Boost When You Need It
The Spirit 2 now delivers:
- **2kW nominal power (approx. 5hp equivalent)**
- **3kW boost mode** for short bursts
If you used to cruise at 50% throttle on the Spirit 1.0, you’ll now achieve the same speed at closer to 25%.
The direct-drive motor still has just one moving part. No gears. No friction noise. Just smooth, instant torque at any RPM.
## Bigger Battery — Same Weight
The new 1,536Wh Spirit Battery Ultra is about 20% larger than the previous generation battery — and the largest integrated battery in its class.

Key highlights:
- Just under 1 hour runtime at full throttle
- Nearly 2 hours at half throttle
- 1,000+ charge cycles

The battery now slides into place and locks with a solid mechanical lever. It’s fast, secure, and much easier to handle when you’re in a wobbly dinghy.
And importantly—ePropulsion continues to support third-party 48V lithium batteries via an adapter (when available). That flexibility remains rare in this industry.
## Hydrogeneration, Now Standard
Hydrogeneration is no longer reserved for specific models. With the Spirit 2, it’s built in.
Under sail at 3 knots or more (though practically 6 knots is needed for meaningful recharging), the motor regenerates power back into the battery, similar to regenerative braking in an EV. It’s ideal for sailboats up to about 2,200kg (5,000lbs).
For sailors, this means:
- Extended range
- Simpler product lineup
- No choosing between “regeneration” and “non-regeneration” versions
Note: Hydrogeneration only works with ePropulsion batteries, but both the standard Spirit 2 battery and any of the E-series batteries are compatible.

A really well-designed user interface shows:

It’s bright, readable in direct sunlight, and a huge step up from the previous monochrome display.
### Adjustable, Folding Tiller
Borrowed and improved from the eLite:
- Extendable by 25cm
- Adjustable angle (horizontal, vertical, 45° up, full free mode)
- Folds and locks parallel for transport
- Balanced for easy one-handed carrying
This alone makes dock handling and storage noticeably better.
### Easier Installation and Transport
The Spirit 2 borrows the quick attach/detach design of the eLite and RemigoOne to allow the transom mount to stay mounted on the boat while you stow the motor (and battery).
A push-button release lets you remove the motor from the clamp bracket in seconds. Installation is literally seconds: place it on the bracket and it self-locks. One great use case is when you want to use it on both your tender and your sailboat—with a second transom mount permanently attached to your tender, switching the motor between tender and sailboat is quick and painless.
The clamp bracket itself is significantly beefier than the Spirit 1.0’s.
Additional practical improvements:
- Shallow water drive toggle
- 70° and 90° tilt positions

As I write this, the Spirit 2 is currently in production, gearing up for worldwide launch in April, with general availability limited at first and increasing throughout the summer. We are expecting to obtain our first demo unit before the end of April in time for the BC Boat Show, and additional units for inventory before the end of May.
As of today (February 16, 2026) we have opened up pre-orders for the Spirit 2. Orders will be fulfilled in sequence as they are received.
Throughout the summer, availability is expected to be fairly limited, while demand is expected to be high (see the great list of design innovations above).

## ePropulsion Unveils Spirit 2: Double the Power, Same Portability

ePropulsion has just launched the 4th generation of its immensely popular Spirit electric outboard. While we don’t have all the details yet (our official dealer technical training won’t happen for a couple weeks still), but the information available so far paints a clear picture: this is a major upgrade over the Spirit 1.0 with only a modest price increase.
In short, expect **roughly twice the usable power for about a quarter more cost**.
While the Spirit 1.0 will remain in the lineup for now, the Spirit 2 edges close to the Navy 3.0’s territory. Its combination of higher output, improved battery tech, and built-in hydrogeneration suggests the Navy 3.0’s long-term future may be limited.
Below is an early look at what’s new. Full specifications will follow once we add the model to the OceansEV catalogue and begin taking orders.
## Power Output: 2kW Nominal, 3kW Boost
The nominal power output has been increased to 2kW from the current 1kW on the Spirit 1.0. However, it also adds a “boost mode” that steps up power output to 3kW when needed. The eLite also includes a “boost mode” from the nominal 500W to 750W for up to a minute at a time; we expect the Spirit 2 to operate similarly.
Because any horsepower equivalent is a marketing approximation based on thrust/performance rather than a strict mechanical conversion, we expect the Spirit 2 to be rated as about 4.5hp-equivalent at its full 2kW output, and 6hp equivalent in boost mode. However, the propeller has also been redesigned, so it’s possible it may be marketed as a 5hp equivalent, and 7hp in boost mode. We’ll know more soon. For now, what we know is that the Spirit 2 is twice as powerful at all RPMs as the Spirit 1.0 models, and three times as powerful for short bursts.
Another way to think of it is that the Spirit 2 should be capable of getting a small dinghy up on a plane (something that wasn’t possible with the Spirit 1.0). If your typical cruising speed with a Spirit 1.0 was at 50% throttle (which would have given you up to 2.5 hours of runtime), you’ll only need 25% of the throttle for the same cruising speed.
## Range: More Energy Density, Same System Weight
The integrated, removable battery of the Spirit 1.0 has also been redesigned (now called the Spirit Battery Ultra), and is not only more compact, it also has 40% more energy storage 1,539Wh (vs. the Spirit Battery Plus‘ 1,276Wh). This new battery will provide a runtime at full throttle of just under an hour, or just under 2 hours at half throttle (which would be the same as full throttle on the Spirit 1.0). What’s most remarkable is that the Spirit Battery Ultra is roughly the same weight as the old battery, and the entire system is also the same weight (about 20kg/44lbs).
The Spirit Battery Ultra acts as a power bank, and can charge devices at up to 45W. We expect that it includes one or more USB-C ports, like the eLite does.
The new Spirit Battery Ultra is still compatible with 3rd-party batteries—it’s great news that ePropulsion continues provide this flexibility which very few other manufacturers do.
## Hydrogeneration Now Standard
Hydrogeneration is built into the Spirit 2. Under sail and moving at least 3 knots, the motor can recharge the battery—no more choosing between Evo (with regeneration) and Plus (without it). This simplifies the product line and offers more flexibility for sailors.
## New Full-Colour LCD Display
The display on the Spirit 2 looks gorgeous—more like a modern smartphone display than the low resolution, monochrome display of the Spirit 1.0. It’s not clear yet whether the new firmware will take advantage of the new display and provide a richer set of information than the Spirit 1.0, nor if the display is a touchscreen or not.
## Easier Transport
Tiller folds at a 90-degree angle and locks to allow for easy carrying (likely with the battery detached) with perfect weight balance, just like like eLite.
## Adjustable-length Tiller
The final new feature we noted is a nice improvement, and another feature inspired by the eLite—an extendable tiller handle

## How to Maximize the Lifespan of Your Electric Outboard Motor Battery

Looking after your electric outboard battery isn’t complicated, but a few disciplined habits will add years of useful service. We occasionally hear from customers whose battery has died (will no longer hold a decent charge) prematurely—in as little as 4 years. In virtually all cases it was the result of not knowing how to properly care for a lithium-ion battery. Here is a collection of our best tips for making sure your battery lasts for many years (4-8 is expected, but with proper care some higher-quality batteries, like those in the RemigoOne should provide a usable life of more than a decade).
## A Few Words on Different Lithium Battery Chemistries
Whether for an electric outboard motor or an e-bike or an EV, what we generally refer to as “lithium ion” batteries cover a couple different battery chemistries. The two most common technologies used in 2025 are:
- **NMC/NCA**: Nickel–manganese–cobalt / nickel–cobalt–aluminium. These battery cells have the highest energy density and are often packaged as a “Li-ion polymer” pouch (a packaging format, not a chemistry) and used where weight matters (ex. Spirit 1.0 Plus/Evo, eLite, RemigoOne). They are more sensitive to heat/cold than other chemistries, but when kept cool and not stored full or empty, typically last 800 to 1,000 cycles before capacity drops to 80% or original.
- **LiFePO4**: Lithium iron phosphate batteries are more stable and forgiving of temperature extremes, are extremely safe (lowest thermal-runaway propensity) and have a longer lifespan than NMC/NCA batteries (2,000-5,000 charge cycles to ~80%). They are not as energy dense, so these batteries tend to be quite heavy.
Regardless of the battery chemistry used in your battery, the following tips apply.
**
SoC**: *State of charge. The current charge level of your battery.*
## Daily use: Gentle on Temperature and Don’t Fully Discharge
- **Avoid heat**. Elevated temperatures accelerate ageing in all lithium batteries. Try to keep the pack below ~30°C when possible (shade the battery from the sun when possible and don’t leave it baking in a car trunk).
- **Don’t run it empty**: Avoid regularly depleting the battery less than 20%. If you regularly run your battery below 20%, it will decrease the lifespan of your battery. We recommend charging your battery when it reaches 20% whenever possible. It’s OK to occasionally deplete it to as low as 5% but try not to fully deplete it. You can always purchase a second Spirit Battery Plus or E60 battery for your ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus or Spirit 1.0 Evo if you need more range.
- **Keep connectors clean and dry**. Rinse off salt, dry the ports, cap them, and apply contact spray every few months. Use a plastic-safe, no-residue cleaner like MG Chemicals 409B Electrosolve Contact Cleaner or WD-40 Specialist Electrical Contact Cleaner—not the regular WD-40) first, then (optionally) a light protectant like dielectric grease (apply a tiny amount to the plug’s pins or around the seal—not blobs inside the battery port. It’s non-conductive; more is not better).
## Good Charging Habits Extend Battery Life
- **Partial charges are fine—often better**. Lithium batteries don’t need to be kept at 100% (and in fact shouldn’t be kept fully charged for long—a full charge puts stress on the cells). Top up to what you need for the trip and let the pack rest somewhere in the mid-range when practical.
- **Use the proper charger**. The Spirit Battery Plus, eLite and RemigoOne have specific BMS/charger profiles—only use the charger intended for the battery and never a 3rd-party charger, to ensure correct cut-off and cell balancing.
- **Before big days, charge fully; after big days, don’t store empty**. A full battery just before use is good; full for weeks is not. If you won’t use the boat for a while, drop the SoC (“state-of-charge”) to storage levels (see below).
- **Mind charging temperatures**. Charge within the recommended range (roughly 15°C–25°C) and do not charge at or below 0°C; cold-charge can cause lithium plating and permanent capacity loss. The battery should always be charged at between 5°C and 30°C. Never use your battery to power the motor when the temperature is below -10°C or above 60°C.
- **Always recharge promptly after depleting**. If you fully discharge on the water, recharge promptly. Prolonged sitting at very low SoC stresses the pack. ePropulsion explicitly advises charging immediately after full discharge.
## Off-Season Storage
- **Keep the battery semi-charged over the winter**. Before storing your battery for the winter, charge it to over 60%. The battery will slowly discharge until it hits 60%. When the battery has not been used in a while and hits 60% charge, it will go into deep sleep mode. In deep sleep mode, the battery self discharges more slowly than normal. To wake it up in the Spring, simply plug the battery into the charger. It is recommended that you plug in the battery once every three months when not in use in order to check the state of charge. If it has fallen much below 60%, repeat the step above. If you store your battery for a long period of time with less than 60% charge, it may self discharge to 0%. If the battery deeply discharges to a true zero percent charge, it may not be able to be recovered and you will need to purchase a new battery.

## A Clever Way to Lock Your Spirit 1.0 Electric Outboard to Your Boat

Given the cost of an ePropulsion Spirit electric outboard, it would be quite unfortunate to return to your boat and find your motor or battery missing. Since ePropulsion does not sell a lock for the motor or battery, many customers employ a bicycle cable lock, running it through the battery handle and behind the metal bar in the transom mount. It’s time consuming to lock and unlock the motor each time, and these types of locks can be easily cut with inexpensive bolt cutters, so it’s not an ideal solution.
We’ve found a simple yet elegant method of locking your Spirit 1.0 Plus or Evo while you’re away from the boat. When we first started seeing social media posts illustrating how quick and easy it was to properly secure a Spirit 1.0 motor and battery, we sought out the manufacturer to import them into Canada. It took a while but we finally found the maker—an electric propulsion enthusiast in Austria who, after facing the issue of needing to constantly lock his motor, devised a solution using a 3D printer.
Presenting the Spirit 1.0 Lock Set:
## Simple Design
The Spirit 1.0 Lock Set is clever and effective, elegant in it’s simplicity. There are two parts—one lock fits into the top of the battery release handle, and the other prevents the transom mount screws from being loosened. They are made of high quality, durable and UV-resistant plastic with stainless steel lock cartridges. The lock itself has a small, spring-loaded keyhole cover to prevent water or debris from entering the chamber.
## Quick Installation and Removal
Installing the locks is really simple. To lock the Spirit Battery, you simply insert the battery lock into on top of the release handle then turn the key. The battery is not locked to the motor.
To lock the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 motor, you just need to make sure the blue clamp knobs are facing each other. With the lock cartridge at the top right, Insert the left knob into the slot on the left side, then place the lock over the knob on the right side. Turn the key and…done! Your motor and battery are now secure!

ePropulsion has announced a new version of the eLite, which extends the length of the unit by 15cm (about 6″). ## eLite
The smallest ePropulsion outboard motor is the entirely self-contained eLite. The lithium-ion battery is contained in the motor’s watertight body, and an LED display on top displays remaining charge, power output, speed and estimated range. The battery can be recharged by solar panels and can also charge other devices like a smartphone thanks to a USB-C port.
The eLite is incredibly small and light at only 6.7kg (14.7lbs) and super easy to carry thanks to a folding tiller that doubles as a carrying handle (and the motor is perfectly balanced when carrying it). It easily attaches and and detaches from the transom clamp with a one-click quick release in seconds.
Its adjustable trim angles and shallow water mode make it effective in areas with limited depth.
At 500W it provides equivalent power to a 1.5hp gas motor, but with no fumes, no noise, no maintenance! It will run for up to 45 minutes at full speed on a full charge, but typical real-world usage gets you about 2-3 hours of runtime.
The eLite is suitable for small boats (up to 10ft), RIBs and SIBs, dinghies and tenders. It’s an ideal solution to service sailing and yachting vessels, especially liveaboards, as an ultra-portable solution to get to shore and back.
## RemigoOne

## Spirit 1.0 Plus
The ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus is our most popular electric outboard motor because of it’s versatility. It’s perfect for use on a wide range of dinghies, fishing boats, jon boats, RIBs and SIBs, sailboats and tenders. Its 1,000W output provides the equivalent power to a 3HP gas motor. This is enough power for larger boats and even small sailboats up to 1,500kg (3,300lbs).
The integrated, removable battery (which floats!) provides up to 75 minutes of runtime at full throttle, but since people typically never run the motor at full throttle continuously, gives you realistically 2-3 hours of runtime. For greater range, the Spirit 1.0 Plus battery can be recharged with solar panels, or the motor can also be powered with an external lithium battery.
The Spirit 1.0 Plus is compact, foldable and lightweight at only 19kg (42lbs), including the battery.
## Spirit 2
The Spirit 2 is the latest generation in the Spirit line, and doubles the power, increases the range and improves on the overall design of the Spirit 1.0 series. It’s perfect for use on a wide range of dinghies, fishing boats, jon boats, RIBs and SIBs, sailboats and tenders. With 2,000W of output it provides the equivalent power to a 5HP gas motor, and also offers a 3,000W “boost” mode. This is enough power for larger boats and even small sailboats up to 1,500kg (3,300lbs).
Like the Spirit 1.0 Evo, it also offers hydrogeneration, so under sail power your battery can be recharging.
The larger battery has a nice quick-release design. The motor also has a quick-release design to quickly attach and detach from the transom mount. The battery and motor are both very portable and lightweight at about 10kg (22lbs) each.
Other innovative features include a large full-colour, daylight-readable display, integrated GPS and a multi-angle, adjustable and extendable tiller for better comfort and control.
## Navy 6.0 Evo
The Navy 6.0 Evo is a 6,000W electric outboard motor, with the equivalent power profile to a 9.9hp gas motor, albeit one that’s silent, produces no emissions and requires virtually no maintenance. Like the Spirit 2, the Navy 6.0 Evo also features hydrogeneration, allowing you to recharge the battery while sailing.
A compatible lithium battery is required. You can use either the genuine ePropulsion E163 lithium (LiFePO4) battery, or a 3rd-party battery like the Epoch 100Ah lithium (LiFePO4) battery. The E163 is a massive battery and will provide you 1.5 hours of at full throttle (or much more for small boats and/or when operating at slower speeds).
If you use a different 3rd-party battery brand, just make sure you know it’s compatible with the Navy 6.0 Evo’s amperage requirements. Also note that if you want to take advantage of hydrogeneration, you must use the genuine ePropulsion E163 battery.
The Navy 6.0 Evo is great for any boat up to 6,000kg (14,500lbs).
## Pod Drive 6.0 Evo
The Pod Drive 6.0 Evo provides the same 6,000W of power (equivalent to a 9.9HP motor) as the Navy 6.0 Evo. It also offers the same hydrogeneration feature (as long as you use the genuine ePropulsion E163 battery). However, that’s where the similarities end.
If you took the Navy 6.0 Evo but detached everything above the motor and propeller (the bottom 18 inches or so) you would have a Pod Drive 6.0 Evo. The Pod Drive is mounted under your hull, with cables threaded through a sealed opening and connected to a controller and the battery inside the boat. The Pod Drive 6.0 Evo is therefore attached permanently to the boat and is always submerged when your boat is in the water.
The Pod Drive 6.0 Evo is basically the stealth ninja of ePropulsion motors—it’s tucked away under your boat rather than hanging off the transom. Here’s why people love it (and how it differs from the other ePropulsion outboards):
### Space-Saving, Sleeker Look
Because the Pod Drive is installed under the hull, you free up your transom for other uses (or just keep it looking clean). It’s not this big engine hanging off the back, so you get a more streamlined and modern aesthetic.

## What You Need to Know About Using a 3rd-party Lithium Battery with ePropulsion Electric Motors

Unlike many other electric motor brands, ePropulsion allows the use of 3rd-party batteries. However, to avoid damaging your battery or Navy motor, it’s crucial to pick the right one. Using the wrong battery can cause significant problems, given the significant power requirements of the Navy 3.0 Evo, Navy 6.0 Evo and Pod Drive 6.0 Evo.
## Choosing a 3rd-Party Battery
First, we’re only considering lithium (LiFePO4) batteries here, because the capacity to weight ratio is vastly better than lead-acid batteries, although lead-acid batteries can be used.
The lithium batteries most similar to the purpose-built ePropulsion batteries are most commonly intended for use in electric golf carts. Like electric outboard motors, golf carts have high demands on continuous high-current power draws. Because they’re not intended for boats, these batteries often aren’t environmentally sealed and don’t provide a suitable IP rating for a water-based environment, unlike ePropulsion’s batteries. You’ll need to keep this in mind when considering placement in your boat.
### Key Specifications
- **Voltage**: Make sure the battery you choose a 48V battery or connect the batteries in series to create a 48V system (eg. four 12V batteries or two 24V batteries.
- **Continuous discharge current**: The Navy 3.0 outputs up to 3,000W and the Navy 6.0 outputs up to 6,000W. Being 48V systems, this corresponds to 62.5A and 125A respectively. Therefore your 3rd-party battery must be able to sustain a continuous current discharge of 62.5A when used with a Navy 3.0, and 125A when used with a Navy 6.0.

## Risks of Using the Wrong Battery
Batteries capable of sustaining high prolonged current draw (like ePropulsion’s own batteries) are more expensive than those that have lower limits on current draw, or those that support a high draw but only for small bursts.
While it’s technically possible to save even more money by purchasing a 3rd-party battery that doesn’t white meet the maximum continuous discharge current spec, you should be aware of the potential consequences. Neither ePropulsion nor OceansEV recommends this, for the record.
- **Voltage sag**: High current draws near or exceeding the battery’s limit may lead to voltage sag. If the battery’s protection circuitry kicks in due to excessive current draw, this can trigger a low-voltage cutoff on the motor and the motor may shut down unexpectedly, which could be dangerous, especially if you’re far from shore or in challenging conditions.
- **Damage to Motor Electronics:** Inconsistent current output from the battery—when the maximum continuous current limit is breached forcing the battery to cut output then start again—can damage the motor’s internal electronics.
- **Battery Overheating:** Overheating from operating at or past the current discharge limit can degrade the battery cells, leading to potential thermal damage and reducing lifespan or causing permanent damage.
Any damage that occurs to a Navy motor from using a 3rd-party battery will void the warranty.
## Connecting a 3rd-Party Battery to an ePropulsion Electric Motor
There are two options for connecting the motor to the battery:
- **Direct connection by replacing default connectors**: Replace the quick-connect terminals on the motor’s cable with crimp-on ring terminals. Since up to 125A of current may flow through these connections, ensure they are properly attached. Professional installation is recommended. Also keep in mind that the warranty may not cover any damage sustained by the motor if it’s determined a problem was caused by improper connections.
- **Using a bus bar and proper cabling**: A safer option is to use universal battery cables connected through a bus bar. This preserves the quick-disconnect functionality of ePropulsion’s system and ensures reliable connections.
### Configuring the Throttle Control
ePropulsion batteries are plug-n-play (thanks to the communications cable), but when connecting a 3rd-party battery, make sure you configure the tiller or remote throttle based on the battery you’re using, by programming the appropriate values for battery chemistry type, capacity, and cutoff voltage.
## Why Choose ePropulsion Batteries?
If you want to avoid any chance of problems and like to buy the very best, you can’t go wrong with ePropulsion’s own batteries, the E-series LiFePO4 batteries. Yes, they are more expensive, but they’re designed specifically for the Navy-series motors and offer several significant benefits, particularly regarding efficiency, safety, and performance. In addition, if there’s an issue with the motor, using an ePropulsion battery ensures your warranty won’t be voided by use of a 3rd-party battery.
Note that we’re not advocating for or against ePropulsion batteries. We recognize that there are some benefits associated with genuine ePropulsion batteries and some risks with using a 3rd-party battery, they also carry a higher cost (although not as much as you might think).
### Optimal Performance
Genuine ePropulsion batteries are designed to work seamlessly with ePropulsion motors. They ensure consistent power delivery, avoiding fluctuations that could harm the motor or reduce performance. The battery’s performance is calibrated to provide the appropriate voltage and current for efficient motor operation, enhancing the motor’s lifespan and reducing wear.
### Safety Features
ePropulsion batteries feature a robust BMS (battery management system) for safety (arguably the most important component of a high-capacity lithium battery). The battery’s BMS communicates with the motor to provide real-time status updates, such as charge level, temperature, and health. The BMS in ePropulsion batteries come with built-in safety mechanisms, such as overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, and temperature protections, ensuring safe operation. Accurate power management avoids sudden power loss, especially during critical operations.
While all lithium batteries will have a BMS, the quality of the BMS can vary greatly, and this is the component that is typically compromised by some manufacturers to achieve a lower price point.
The BMS in ePropulsion batteries are specifically tuned to the requirements of ePropulsion motors, reducing the risk of damage or accidents.
### Real-time Communications Between Battery and Motor
One feature that comes with the genuine ePropulsion battery is the ability for the battery to communicate directly with the motor via the communications cable.
The cable allows the motor and the battery to exchange real-time data, such as battery charge status, voltage, current draw, and temperature. This information is displayed on the motor’s interface, enabling the user to monitor system performance at a glance. By communicating precise power requirements, the motor ensures the battery delivers energy efficiently, reducing wastage and optimizing run time.
The cable enables the motor and battery to work together to implement safety measures. For example, the motor can reduce power output or shut down if the battery is overheating. It prevents the motor from operating when the battery charge is too low, protecting both components.
Advanced features like range estimation and energy consumption tracking rely on the data shared via the communications cable. These features improve the user’s ability to plan trips and avoid running out of power unexpectedly.
Some batteries provide built-in Bluetooth wireless and a free smartphone app to monitor information that would be accessed on the tiller display or remote display when using an ePropulsion battery and the communications cable. The app will display real-time data such as power draw and remaining capacity, and via the phone’s GPS data, estimated range remaining. This at least partly compensates for not having that battery-motor communication, but requires you to keep your phone handy. Without Bluetooth and an app, 3rd-party batteries will usually build a simple LED gauge directly into the battery, and this gives you a rough idea of remaining capacity, but nothing else.
## Some 3rd-Party Batteries to Pair With a Navy 6.0 Evo and Pod Drive 6.0 Evo
We’ve compiled a list of some batteries that meet the specs required of the Navy 6.0 Evo and Pod Drive 6.0 Evo. We chose the Navy 6.0/Pod Drive 6.0 because of their higher power and continuous current discharge requirements…finding batteries with the required specs is not as easy as batteries for the Navy 3.0, which are far more plentiful.
The prices in the table below include the cost of the universal battery cables and the bus bar, as this is the recommended method to connect a 3rd-party battery. If you didn’t want a quick-disconnect option and prefer to crimp/solder your own ring terminals, you would just reduce the cost by the price of these two products (about CAD$438).
Note that we aren’t recommending any of these batteries (except for the ePropulsion and Epoch batteries) and make no claims about the quality of them.

## The Unexpected Benefits of an Electric Outboard Motor

We’ve written before about the many advantages of electric motors over their gas-powered equivalents. Most of these are not surprising and are directly tied to the fact that there’s no burning of fossil fuels and the electric motor has one moving part so there’s virtually nothing to maintain or fix.
But there are also several unexpected, or “hidden” benefits that owners tend to discover only after they’ve used an electric outboard. Here are several “pleasant surprises” we’ve collected from our customers and our own experience of using an electric outboard.
## No Gasoline Smell Permeating Every Surface of the Car Interior

One of the downsides of a gas-powered outboard motor is that no matter how careful you are, when transporting it in your car, the car usually reeks of gasoline for days afterwards. Even if you empty the tank completely beforehand and no gas is actually spilled (easier said than done), leftover traces of fuel in the carburetor and fuel lines somehow seems to get everywhere.
Of course, gas is not the only messy liquid that can escape a combustion engine. Engine oil can leak onto the back of your car (hope you used a tarp with no holes in it) or worse—into the cylinders and destroy the engine when you next start it up.
Contrast that with an electric motor, that has no fluids at all.
## No Noxious Fumes
If you’ve owned a boat for any length of time you’ve likely gotten used to breathing in—and sometimes choking on—some nasty fumes. Because it’s just something that goes hand-in-hand with boating, it’s not something one generally thinks about, and therefore it’s a bit of a surprise when you first use an electric outboard and suddenly notice…wow, the air is clean!
As an electric outboard motor owner myself, I can state confidently that lately when I’m a guest on a boat with a gas motor, it’s definitely the first thing I notice. The smoke and fumes always seem a lot worse than I remember.
## No More Refuelling
No longer needing to buy gas may not be unexpected (in fact, this is likely the one thing you’d be looking forward to the most). But it still comes as a bit of a shock how cool it is to never have to purchase gas again.
Not only the lack of purchasing, but also the act of refuelling. Owning an electric outboard motor helps you realize all the little aspects that you tend not to think about, but make a huge difference combined. Things like:
- Not having to wait in line for the pumps.
- Not having to mix fuel for your 2-stroke engine.
- Not having to dispose of it when it goes bad after being stored for extended periods of time.
- Having to close all hatches every time you pump gas.
- Ensuring everyone gets off the boat before refuelling.
- Accidentally overfilling, spilling fuel into the bilge or into the water.

## Understanding Electric Outboard Power Ratings

Many people who are new to the world of electric outboard motors are confused as to why their power is measured in kilowatts, but with an “equivalent horsepower rating”. For instance, the Spirit 1.0 Plus is a 1kW electric outboard that is equivalent to a 3hp gas motor.
Why aren’t electric outboards measured only by horsepower like the outboard industry has been doing for decades?
Both horsepower and kilowatts are a measure of power output. If an electric outboard is rated at 6kW, then 6kW is its maximum power output at full throttle. If an internal combustion outboard is rated at 9.9hp, then 9.9hp is its maximum power output at full throttle.
A straightforward comparison of kW to hp is that 1 kilowatt is equal to 1.34 horsepower. Conversely, 0.75 of a kilowatt equals about 1 horsepower. So how does a 1 kilowatt motor get to be 3 horsepower instead of 1.5?
ePropulsion and other electric outboard manufacturers use the term “equivalent propulsive power”. Propulsive power is a term that has been used in commercial shipping for nearly 100 years. It indicates the performance actually delivered by the boat‘s motor, taking all drive losses into account.
Without getting too technical, gas outboards measure shaft power, while ePropulsion measures the actual propulsive power of the propeller driving the boat through the water.
When combustion engines burn gasoline or diesel, they primarily use the stored energy to produce heat: 5-15% of the supplied energy is used to propel the boat and the rest is lost due to inefficiencies. With a gas motor, the power loss from the motor, through the gears to the propeller can be 85% to 95%. In contrast, the “shaft” on an electric motor is essentially just the wires running from the battery to the motor (which is actually under water, running inline with the prop).
A gasoline outboard with an advertised shaft power of 6 HP actually typically provides a mere 1.6hp of “propulsive power”.
Electric motors also deliver a lot of torque, which is available at any rotational speed. This characteristic allows them to turn large, efficient, high-pitch propellers that would cause an equivalent combustion engine to stall at startup. And gas motors only reach their peak hp output at specific RPMs.
There’s a lot more to it, but in order to stay out of the technical weeds, we can wrap it up here by concluding that what you need to pay attention to if you are familiar with gas motors is the “equivalent horsepower” rating to set your expectations about how an electric outboard motor will perform. But don’t forget that it will also perform without any sound, fumes, oily discharge and will continue to do so year after year with virtually no maintenance.

## How to Maximize Your Electric Motor Range

We answered several common questions in our last article about the range of electric outboard motors. Below are some straightforward strategies to get the most range out of your electric outboard motor.
## Reduce Speed
A simple rule of thumb with electric propulsion in water is that it takes 8 times the power to go twice as fast. The Spirit 1.0 Plus has a 1276 Wh integrated battery. At full throttle (1000 watts of power), you get 75-min runtime travelling about 10 km/h or 6.2 mph. This will take you 12.5km (8 miles).
However, if you reduce your throttle to 25%, which is 250 Watts, your speed will be about 7.1 km/h (4.4 mph) which is only 30% slower. If you travelled travel 3.2 km (2 miles), you would arrive only 8 min later than at the full-throttle speed. This gives you extra time to enjoy the silence of your electric outboard and relax—8 min won’t ruin your life! At this speed your range is greatly increased—you could run the motor for up to 5 hours and travel 36.5 kms (22 miles)! In short, you sacrifice 30% in speed, but you get 214% more range.
The actual speed-range curve varies between different boats, load, water conditions and etc, but the logic behind is the same: **Go slower, and you can travel further.**
## Extra or Larger Batteries
You are not confined to the single integrated battery of your Spirit 1.0 Plus. It’s modular and can be swapped out in seconds, so an easy way to double your range is to buy an extra Spirit Battery Plus. For serious range that rivals or exceeds what you’d get with a tank of gas, you could even get one of the larger external batteries used with the larger electric motors like the Navy series.
Extra batteries don’t need to be genuine ePropulsion batteries—you can use 3rd-party batteries that meet the specs and save some money (although be aware you do lose some features like hydrogeneration). A smart strategy is to purchase a 3rd-party battery as a spare in addition to the standard ePropulsion battery. Note that an external battery cable is required to connect an external battery.
## Solar Charging
With the Solar Charge Controller, you can connect a solar panel that outputs up to 180W or power. On a sunny day you could potentially double your range at the same speed. Solar charging works when even while the electric motor is operating.
## Hydrogeneration
Hydrogeneration is another way of recharging your battery cleanly and for free. Hydrogeneration pushes charge back into the battery with water passively spinning the propeller which generates electricity through electromagnetic induction. It requires your sailboat to be powered by wind and travelling at least 7.4 km/h (4.6 mph), and if travelling at 18.5 km/h (11.5 mph) you’ll be generating 300W of power, enough to charge your depleted Spirit battery to 90% in about 3.5 hours.

When it comes to electric outboard motors in a boat, people like the environmental friendliness, the convenience, the responsiveness. They love the super-quiet operation and the lack of maintenance requirements. But whether it’s because of stories they’ve heard from early adopters of electric motors from years past, articles about range anxiety with electric cars, or just unfamiliarity with modern lithium-ion batteries and their capacities, one concern still looms. Many people are afraid to take the leap to electric motors because they perceive the range to be so low that there’s a high likelihood they’ll get stranded out on the water.
When we exhibit at boat shows, the most common question we’re asked is “what’s the range?” It’s never a straightforward answer, and difficult to cover all the nuances to a passing prospect. I’ll try to cover the whole story here, but keep in mind that depending on when you’re reading this, the story may be somewhat different as battery technology is constantly changing (for the better).
## Good Planning is Still Required
The first point to note is that electric outboard motors share one attribute with their gas counterparts: you are bringing a limited supply of energy to power your motor. In the case of an electric motor, it’s not a physical substance (and not something that burns, is smelly, or pollutes the air and water) but there’s a finite supply on your boat.
In years past, I’ve run out of gas on the water more times than I’d like to admit. In each instance, I received a friendly tow back to the marina or got a couple of gallons of gasoline from a towing service or a good Samaritan with a jerry can.
The common rule that boaters rely on is the rule of thirds: Use a third of your fuel to get to your destination, a third to get back, and always have a third in reserve. The same holds true for operating your electric outboard, and this emphasizes the proper planning is still important.
Of course, if your plans change (or your calculations were incorrect) and you require a premature refuelling, electric motor owners will be faced with a several-hour delay while they wait for their battery to recharge. Fair enough. This can be mitigated somewhat by use of a fast charger, and we recommend everyone have one (not to use all the time it’s not good for your battery life, but indispensable for those times when you really do need to charge fast).
## Can I Go as Far With an Electric Motor as I Can With a Gas Motor?
A typical 3.5 hp four-stroke gas motor has a 1.1L (0.5 gal) fuel tank, which will allow the motor to run at full throttle for about 50 minutes when full. Therefore, you’ll go farther (at 75 minutes of runtime at full throttle) with a Spirit 1.0 Plus or Evo. It’s true that you can have an external fuel tank elsewhere in the boat (taking up space), but it’s also true that you can augment the integrated battery with an external battery. Given the much higher energy density of lithium batteries, a much smaller and lighter battery will get you more range than an external fuel tank.
To summarize, like with a gas motor your range is a factor of how much fuel (energy) you bring with you.
## So What’s the Range?
This is a difficult question to answer because, like with gas motors, it depends on so many factors: battery size, travel speed, wind speed and direction, current, hull shape, weight of the boat, etc. It’s like asking “how long is a piece of string?”
What is easier to answer is how long (in hours or minutes) you can operate an electric outboard with batteries of different sizes. How far you’ll go will while it’s running will depend on those factors above, but we can offer some examples and guidelines. For example, an eLite will run for 45 minutes, transporting an 8 ft aluminum boat about 5.6km (3.5 miles) on a full charge at full throttle (going about 7.5 km/h or 4.7mph) on calm lake water. A Spirit 1.0 Plus will run for 75 minutes, taking you about 12.5 km (7.8 miles) on a full charge at full throttle (going about 10 km/h or 6.2 mph) on calm lake water. Another figure we like to quote is that you could expect a 36-mile range (22 miles) if you drop the speed down to 7.1 km/h (4.4 mph). You could easily go fishing all day at trolling speed.
Of course, one rarely travels with the throttle wide open the entire time, so your actual range will typically be a lot higher than the figures quoted above.
## Electric Outboard Motor Use Cases
On the surface (pun intended) the range of a small electric motor seems to pale in comparison to a typical small gas outboard. Keep in mind that the intended use cases for the eLite and Spirit models are not to serve as the primary propulsion for power-driven pleasure craft. They also can’t match the speed that a larger gas motor (9.9hp to 50hp) is capable of. You won’t be planing your boat with an eLite or Spirit electric motor.
While it’s certainly possible to have an electric outboard the the power output you need for that (up to 53hp equivalent, with electric inboard motors capable of even greater power), the cost increases significantly and it becomes less easy to justify the versus an equivalent gas motor.
The smallest electric motors are ideally suited for small boats—tenders, dinghies, RIBs, SIBs, jon boats and other small fishing boats. Small and medium-sized (up to 3,300lbs) sailboats are also perfect candidates.
Good uses cases include ship-to-shore travel, fishing, leaving and entering the marina and electric-only lakes. All of these are applications where long range and high speeds are generally not necessary.

By contrast, rather than pulling the pull cord multiple times (which my wife is loathe to do and my kids struggle with), one simply presses the ON/OFF button—that’s it, you’re ready to go.
Because there are no fumes and no chance of spills, you can store an electric outboard below and not worry about it getting stolen or weather damaged.
Or toss your electric outboard in back of your car! With gas motors, users often complain that their hands, clothes and the car trunk are stained by the oil and the fuel of the outboard, and it is often a big pain to clean afterward.
Electric outboards provide ambidextrous operation (turn the throttle easily either from the left-hand or right-hand side) and provide the ability to propel your boat both forward and reverse. No more swivelling the outboard around to go reverse.

Two-stroke engines require mixing oil into the fuel at a predetermined ratio in order to ensure the engine receives adequate lubrication during operation, otherwise, the engine may blow.
Two-stroke engines running at full power for more than 30 minutes may also cause an explosion. In poor-quality water, the cooling system may get blocked, causing a cooling failure.
In a colder environment, users must replace the antifreeze lubricants and antifreeze gear oil before the first use, otherwise it will not start or cause engine damage.
By contrast, with an electric motor, there’s really very little to go wrong, and if it works fine on the first use, chances are excellent it will continue to work fine for the next 10 years (as long as the battery is charged—that’s really the only thing you have to pay attention to).

So begins our journey! I’m Eric, a co-founder of the company along with my university buddy Greg. When we first conceived of this company in 2023 we outlined some very lofty goals, and while we will still strive for them eventually, we had to reign them in a fair bit during while setting up the company. While we’re both serial entrepreneurs over the past 30 years (including a jointly-owned company in the past), it still seems to surprise us what investment is required (both time and money) with each new venture!
For the immediate future we’ve decided to focus on only electric outboard motors for small vessels.
We’ve been fans of ePropulsion and have chosen to offer this brand exclusively, despite an explosion of competing brands over the past couple of years. The reason is due to innovation, the level of quality and their focus on design. Their product designers pay attention to little details, and you can tell they use their own products frequently (so many technology products are released by companies who you can tell have never experienced the product as a user). Basically, they design their products how we would design them.
One goal of ours that we won’t scale back is our desire to be known as the guys that provide stellar customer service. The good old-fashioned kind of customer service where you bend over backwards to ensure the customer is delighted.

To determine whether the standard or long shaft version of the ePropulsion eLite is appropriate for your boat, you’ wi’ll need to measure your boat’s transom height. This is the vertical distance from the top edge of the transom (where the motor clamps on) to the lowest point of the hull or keel at the back of the boat.
Both versions of the eLite feature a 4-position adjustable bracket design, allowing you to fine-tune the depth once installed. The target transom height ranges for each version are:

### Why the Right Fit Matters
- **If the shaft is too short:** The propeller will sit too close to the surface of the water, causing ventilation or cavitation (drawing air into the blades). This results in a massive loss of thrust and poor efficiency.
- **If the shaft is too long:** The motor will draw unnecessary drag, lowering your top speed and draining the integrated battery faster. It also increases the risk of grounding in shallow water.
### Tip for Measuring
- When you’re between sizes, size up — a slightly long shaft runs fine, but a too-short shaft will cavitate (propeller breaking the surface, losing thrust, overheating).

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, no. Water drag increases exponentially with speed. To go faster, your motor has to push harder against resistance. In practical terms, doubling speed requires roughly four times the power. So a 1 kW motor will get you faster, but only about 30% faster—nowhere near twice as fast.
However, your ride with a Spirit 1.0 Plus / Evo or RemigoOne will feel faster than the eLite. You’ll notice stronger acceleration and a higher top speed (but don’t expect to double your speed). Think of it as moving from a bicycle to an e-bike—not a car. The upgrade is about power, range, and handling, not raw speed.
What you DO get when upgrading from an eLite to a larger 1kW outboard motor is:

Making the tiller “dumb”—it’s just an aluminum tube—is actually a smart design decision. It eliminates a potential mechanical and electrical failure point when a small cable needs to connect a rotating handle to the motor (at the base of the shaft).
The RemigoOne has two simple buttons on the top of the unit, next to two LED displays (one for battery level, one for current speed level). From a standstill, press the button pointing forward to start slowly moving forward. Further presses increase the speed to the maximum (10 steps total). You can also hold down the button to rapidly increase the speed level. To slow down, push the button pointing backward, continue pressing until the motor is stopped.
To travel in reverse, from a standstill, press the button pointing backward to start slowly moving backward. Further presses increase the reverse speed to the maximum (10 steps total).
At any speed and travelling any direction, simultaneously pressing both buttons will stop the motor completely.

Moderate warmth during charging is expected, especially in the constant current phase (charging starts at a high current—usually the max safe current for the battery. This phase continues until the battery reaches a preset voltage, typically around 4.2V per cell).
Higher temperatures may occur if there’s poor ventilation around the charger. Always ensure the charger is at least 30cm away from all other objects, and charge in a well-ventilated room. A garage, a shed or outside on a porch is ideal.
If the charger is too hot to touch comfortably or emits a burning smell, it could indicate a problem. Discontinue use and contact us immediately.

Eventually the charging LED will turn blue and current will stop flowing to the battery entirely.

Hydrogeneration is used to create electricity and is used in hydroelectric power stations and an electric vehicle’s regenerative braking system. During hydrogeneration, water passively spins the propeller on the motor which generates electricity through electromagnetic induction.
ePropulsion is the first motor manufacturer to introduce hydrogenation into their motors.
On a sailboat with an ePropulsion electric motor, it requires the boat to be moving on it’s own from the wind, and travelling at a minimum of 4 knots. If you’re travelling greater than 19 knots, hydrogeneration is automatically disabled to prevent the motor from overcharging.
Hydrogeneration is available with the Spirit 1.0 Evo, Spirit 2, Navy 3.0 Evo, Navy 6.0 Evo or an Pod Drive 6.0 Evo motor (the folding propeller is not compatible). It requires a genuine ePropulsion battery.

## When will my credit card be charged, and how much?

Your credit card will be authorized for the full value of the motor before the rental period begins, and re-authorized every seven days. At the end of the rental we’ll charge the actual number of days or weeks of the rental (unless you choose to keep it).
### Keeping it past initial rental term
If you contact us and let us know you’d like to keep it for longer, we’ll charge the card for the extra duration you request (ex. 3 days, or 1 week).
If at any point the initial term has expired but it still has not been shipped back to us, we will begin charging the card for one day of rental for every day it remains unshipped.
If you continue to hang on to the motor, we’ll continue to charge according to how long it is being rented, up to 115% of the full purchase cost of the motor (at which point it is now consider sold to you).
### Deciding to keep it
If you decide you’d like to keep the rental motor, it’s best to let us know as soon as possible to minimize further rental fees. As soon as you let us know your intention is to keep it, we will calculate your purchase cost (purchase price minus 80% of the rental fees you’ve paid so far), and charge your credit card. Once the transaction completes, you’ll receive a receipt and the motor is now yours. Your warranty begins now.
### Returning the motor
Once the rental motor has been shipped back to us, we will stop any further rental billing. Once it is received back at our shop, our team will examine the motor for damage or loss of components.
- If the motor is still in perfect condition and nothing is missing, there will be no further charges.
- If there is damage that needs to be repaired or components that need to be replaced, we will charge your credit card the repair or replacement cost, as per the rental agreement.
### Early returns
If it was returned earlier than you expected and the total rental term is less than what you’ve already paid, we will issue a credit to your credit card for the amount you paid minus the actual time it was rented.

The most significant risk associated with any high capacity battery is “thermal runaway“, where a battery enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state. This is mitigated with using high-quality lithium cells and a good integrated battery management system (BMS), which ePropulsion batteries have.
Most problems with lithium batteries result from using a battery after it has been physically damaged or using a charger that isn’t compatible with that battery. If your battery becomes physically damaged, do not use it until it has been serviced by a professional.

### Protective Coatings
On top of the aluminum alloy are two protective coatings. An anodic oxide coating (anodizing) is applied to aluminum alloy, and then it’s powder coated.
Pod drives require additional corrosion protection since they remain submerged in saltwater for years at a time. A hard anodic oxidation coating and Teflon coating to replace the normal anodic oxide coating and the powder coating.
### Metal Connectors
To improve the connector durability, Spirit 1.0 Plus and Spirit 1.0 Evo feature a metal connector between the power cable and the battery. The base material is stainless steel, and PVD (Physical vapor deposition) processing is applied to the connector. PVD coating is harder and more corrosion resistant than coatings applied by a standard electroplating process. So after hundreds of times connecting and unplugging, the metal connector can still be corrosion-resistant.
### Anodes
Sacrificial zinc anodes add further corrosion protection, and can be easily replaced as needed.
## Tips for Keeping Your Electric Motor Corrosion-Resistant in Saltwater
Don’t keep your outboard immersed in saltwater permanently. Remove it from the water after each use and rinse it with fresh water. It’s so light and quick to remove (and even quicker if it’s an eLite!) and there is no fuel smell or fumes to worry about, so there’s really no excuse not to stow away indoors once it’s dry.
It’s also important to avoid scratches that could damage the protective coatings. If you happen to scratch the motor body, contact us (and include a photo of it) for inspection. Early damage control and repair will prevent it from getting worse.

Electric outboards don’t require winterization, but the battery should be charged to about 80% before winter storage. It is also advised to check the battery’s charge state every three months during long periods of inactivity.
Inspect the electrical connections of your motor for any corrosion or loose connections periodically. There are other similar maintenance duties you must should for an electric boat motor that you do for the traditional gas motors like checking the propellers and storing it properly.

For the 3rd-party batteries specs, the nominal battery rated voltage should be 48V, and the continuous discharge current should be over 62.5A (Navy 3.0 Evo and Pod Drive 3.0 Evo), and 125A (Navy 6.0 Evo and Pod Drive 6.0 Evo). To ensure at least one hour duration, the battery capacity should reach at least 3000Wh or 6000Wh.
When powered by 3rd-party batteries, the ePropulsion motor cannot access the real-time battery status nor apply the best operation strategy.
If any malfunction occurs due to the 3rd party batteries, the warranty will also not apply.

## How do I maximize the lifespan of my electric outboard motor’s battery?

There are a number of factors that can impact the lifespan of your ePropulsion battery, which include:
- **Avoid regularly depleting the battery less than 20%:** If you regularly run your battery below 20%, it will decrease the lifespan of your battery. We recommend charging your battery when it reaches 20% whenever possible. It’s OK to occasionally deplete it to as low as 5% but try not to fully deplete it. You can always purchase a second Spirit Battery Plus or Spirit Battery Ultra or an E-series battery if you need more range.
- **Employ good charging habits:** While it’s good practice not to deplete your battery less than 20%, it’s better for the battery health to deplete to a 20% to 50% charge before charging it. If you regularly charge your battery when it’s already at 60% or more it will reduce the lifespan.
- **Avoid temperature extremes**: Avoid storing your battery at below freezing temperatures. ePropulsion recommends storing your battery in a dry location with an ambient temperature between 15°C (59°F) and 25°C (77°F). The battery should always be charged at between 5°C (41°F) and 30°C (86°F). Never use your battery to power the motor when the temperature is below -10°C (14°F) or above 60°C (140°F). Charging, discharging and storing your ePropulsion Spirit Plus battery within moderate temperatures within the ranges above will help maximize the battery’s lifespan.
- **Keep it semi-charged over the winter:** Before storing your battery for the winter, charge it to 60%-80%. The battery will slowly discharge until it hits 60%. When the battery has not been used in a while and hits 60% charge, it will go into deep sleep mode. In deep sleep mode, the battery self discharges more slowly than normal. To wake it up in the Spring, simply plug the battery into the charger. It is recommended that you plug in the battery once every three months when not in use in order to check the state of charge. If it has fallen much below 60%, repeat the step above. If you store your battery for a long period of time with less than 60% charge, it may self discharge to 0%. If the battery deeply discharges to a true zero percent charge, it will not be able to be recovered and you will need to purchase a new battery.

## How long do ePropulsion Spirit and RemigoOne batteries last?

ePropulsion are rated for at least 500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge (DoD). This means that you should expect to be able to use your ePropulsion Spirit at least 500 times, running the battery from 100% to 20% each time.
All lithium batteries degrade over time, losing about 1% to 3% of their capacity each year. There are a number of factors that can impact the lifespan of your ePropulsion battery, but if you take good care of it, you can expect to get about 7 years of useful life from the battery. After about 7 years, the battery will likely still be usable, but will have significantly less capacity than it did when it was new. At this point, you can purchase a new battery.
The internal battery in the RemigoOne uses premium LG cells, rated for 1000 cycles (before they reach 80% of original capacity). What this means is that if you’re charging it each day 20% to 100% for 100 days per season, it should last for 10 years before experiencing significant capacity loss.

The chemistry of E-Series batteries is LiFePO4, which is 30% lighter but provides about 50% more usable capacity than AGM lead-acid batteries. In addition, LiFePO4 batteries have a long life of up to 3000 charge cycles, while the AGM batteries can only reach 300 to 500 cycles.
E-series batteries connect to a Navy motor directly, and to a Spirit motor with an External Battery Cable. E-series batteries require the E-Series Battery Charger to charge. Note that this battery does not include the charger, which must be purchased separately.
While 3rd-party batteries can be used with most ePropulsion electric outboard motors, only genuine ePropulsion batteries support hydrogeneration which recharges the battery during sailing. In addition, using using 3rd-party batteries does not allow for the use of a communications cable which brings data accuracy to the gauge and ensures useful operating strategy for safety and performance.

## E60 60Ah LiFePO4 Battery

With three times higher energy density and 70% less weight than lead-acid batteries, E-Series batteries are perfect for smaller vessels with minimal interior storage space. This IP67 waterproof rated, 48V battery is designed for use with Navy 3.0 Evo (6HP equivalent) electric outboard motors, but can also be used to provide super long range with a Spirit 1.0 Plus or Spirit 1.0 Evo motor. It provides 3,072 Wh of charge, enough for about an hour and 20 minutes of runtime at full throttle (typically about 2.5 hours).
Engineered for ease of use, its intelligent battery management system (BMS) is utilized to ensure the utmost safety for users. It features a colour HD display that shows state of charge, voltage, current and alarm information for maximum safety.
The E60’s compact form factor and light, double-layer plastic housing can easily be transported and installed by one person. Its height is only 300 mm, allowing flexible installation under a boat seat or other available spaces.
Connectors can be attached with only one hand—no additional tools are required for simple installation.
The chemistry of E-Series batteries is LiFePO4, which is 30% lighter but provides about 50% more usable capacity than AGM lead-acid batteries. In addition, LiFePO4 batteries have a long life of up to 3000 charge cycles, while the AGM batteries can only reach 300 to 500 cycles.
E-series batteries connect to a Navy motor directly, and to a Spirit motor with an External Battery Cable. E-series batteries require the E-Series Battery Charger to charge. Note that this battery does not include the charger, which must be purchased separately.
While 3rd-party batteries can be used with any ePropulsion electric outboard motor, only genuine ePropulsion batteries support hydrogeneration which recharges the battery during sailing. In addition, using using 3rd-party batteries does not allow for the use of a communications cable which brings data accuracy to the gauge and ensures useful operating strategy for safety and performance.
It’s possible to connect up to 16 E-series batteries (of the same model and same age) in parallel for increased total energy capacity and range. Requires a Battery Bridging Cable Set, a Battery Communications Cable and two Communications Terminators.
