Are electric outboard batteries safe? Will they catch fire like I’ve seen some e-bikes do?

Back to FAQs

ePropulsion uses high-quality cells in their batteries, unlike some e-bike manufacturers who are only trying to meet a low price point. This is one of the reasons that ePropulsion batteries seem relatively expensive—they are well-designed.

The most significant risk associated with any high capacity battery is “thermal runaway“, where a battery enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state. This is mitigated with using high-quality lithium cells and a good integrated battery management system (BMS), which ePropulsion batteries have.

Most problems with lithium batteries result from using a battery after it has been physically damaged or using a charger that isn’t compatible with that battery. If your battery becomes physically damaged, do not use it until it has been serviced by a professional.

Use only your original charger to charge your battery.
